Harada Masao

Harada Masao ( Japanese 原田 正 夫 ; born September 22, 1912 in Kyoto ; † January 22, 2000 in Yokohama ) was a Japanese athlete who specialized in the triple jump .

Harada's greatest sporting success was winning the silver medal in the triple jump at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. With a jump to 15.66 m in the last attempt, he secured second place behind his compatriot Tajima Naoto and ahead of the Australian Jack Metcalfe . Tajima had already taken the lead in the first run with 15.76 m and jumped a new world record with 16.00 m in the fourth attempt. Metcalfe was in second place with his 15.50 m jump from the first attempt, before Harada pushed past him in the end.

Previously, Harada had already won silver medals in the three and long jump at the Far East Championships in Manila in 1934 and a bronze medal in the long jump at the World Student Games in Budapest in 1935. His personal bests were 7.59 m in the long jump (1934) and 15.73 m in the triple jump (1939). He was 1.77 m tall and weighed 60 kg when he was active.
