Jack Metcalfe (actually John Patrick Metcalfe ; born February 3, 1912 in Bellingen , New South Wales , † January 16, 1994 in Tura Beach , New South Wales) was an Australian athlete whose strongest discipline was the triple jump . He also appeared in the long jump , high jump and javelin throw .

Metcalfe celebrated its first international successes at the British Empire Games in London in 1934. He won the triple jump with 15.63 m, won the bronze medal in the long jump with 6.93 m and was fourth in the high jump with 1.88 m. On December 14, 1935 in Sydney he improved the world record of the Japanese Olympic champion Nambu Chūhei in the triple jump by six centimeters to 15.78 m.

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Metcalfe won the bronze medal in the triple jump. After the first round he took second place with a jump of 15.50 m and 26 cm behind the eventual winner Tajima Naoto from Japan. While Metcalfe was unable to improve in this competition, Tajima jumped 16.00 m in the fourth attempt and snatched the world record from him. His compatriot Harada Masao passed Metcalfe in the sixth and last round with 15.66 m. The Australian remained the only medalist in his country at these games. In addition, he reached the shared twelfth rank in the high jump with 1.85 m.

In 1937 Metcalfe won the Australian championships in triple jump and javelin throw. In the high jump he came second. The following year he successfully defended his triple jump title with 15.49 m at the British Empire Games in Sydney. In addition, he won the bronze medal in the javelin throw with 55.53 m, finished fifth in the long jump with 7.08 m and seventh in the high jump with 1.82 m. The Second World War prevented further participation in major international events . Most recently Metcalfe was third in the shot put at the Australian Championships in 1947 . He then remained connected to the sport as manager of the Australian Olympic team from 1948 and as a member of the organizing committee of the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.
