Masaya Katō ( Japanese 加藤 雅 也 , Katō Masaya ; born April 27, 1963 in Nara , Nara Prefecture ) is a Japanese actor .

Life

Masaya, a trained boxer and athlete of Far Eastern " martial arts " fighting styles, was a well-known male model in Japan before his acting career . After studying education at Yokohama State University , he made his debut in 1988 in the children's film Marilyn ni aitai , for which he received the Japanese Academy Award for Best Young Actor . Numerous other Japanese film productions followed before he starred alongside Brooke Shields in his first international film, the US thriller With the Smile of an Enemy in 1994 . He gained international fame especially in 1995 in the role of Ryuji Hanada in the feature film Crying Freeman - The Son of the Dragon , where he performed all the fight scenes and stunts himself.

Masaya often embodies villains in film productions, but does not commit to film genres. In addition to action films, he can also be seen frequently in dramas and comedies.
