It was discovered during the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (1929-1931) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . It is named after the Australian chemist David Orme Masson (1858-1937), a member of the advisory board of this expedition, who also advised Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914). The mountain range was first visited in 1956 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions by a team led by the Australian polar explorer John Béchervaise (1910-1998).
