The Framnes Mountains are a mountain range in the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land , which consists essentially of the Casey Range , the Masson Range and the David Range as well as adjacent peaks and mountains.
They were discovered during the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (1929-1931) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . During the same period, Norwegian whalers sighted the mountains. The entire area was mapped by Norwegian cartographers using aerial photographs taken during the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . Christensen named the Framnesfjella mountain range after a hill near the Sandefjord in southern Norway . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated the name into English in 1947 .
