Matador (tire manufacturer)

Matador is an internationally operating Slovak rubber tire manufacturer based in Púchov .
The company was founded in 1905 in Bratislava (Pozsony ung., Pressburg de.) In the Austro-Hungarian monarchy as Gummi- and Balata-Werke Matador . The Matador brand was also protected from the start. The first Matador tires were produced in 1925 . In the interwar period, Matador was the only tire manufacturer in Czechoslovakia . Above all, domestic brands such as Škoda or Tatra were equipped .
Since tire demand rose sharply after the Second World War , another tire plant was built in Púchov in northern Slovakia in 1947, and production began in 1950.
As a result of a restructuring of the tire industry in Czechoslovakia, the tire manufacturers Baťa , Matador and Rubena all built under the new Barum tire brand as a joint venture with the then independent Austrian tire manufacturer Semperit AG . The plant in Púchov was also affected.
In 1987 its own research laboratory was built.
The state-owned company was privatized in 1990 and converted into a joint stock company. After the division of Czechoslovakia, the Barum brand was taken over by the German tire manufacturer Continental AG , while the location in Púchov, which remained in Slovakia, returned to its old traditional Matador brand . Over 80% of the production is exported under this name.
In 2007, after a few years of the joint venture, Continental completely took over the Matador brand. In 2010 a new production hall was inaugurated at the Púchov location.
Matador is one of the largest exporters in Slovakia.
