Mateo Magariños Cervantes (born January 5, 1823 in Madrid , Spain , † July 24, 1884 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan politician and journalist.

Magariños Cervantes, who belonged to the Partido Colorado , was born the son of Francisco de Borja Magariños. For his father he worked as secretary in 1841, while he was plenipotentiary minister at the Brazilian court of justice. In 1846 he took up a position in the Foreign Ministry. In 1853 he became a lawyer. Then Magariños Cervantes took over the office of Minister for Foreign Affairs and Government Affairs on March 14, 1854 and held this office until November 20 of the same year. As a journalist he wrote for the newspaper El Montevideano in 1846 and for La Opinión Pública in 1854 , where he held a managerial position. In the 6th legislative period, he then held a titular mandate as a member of the Cámara de Representantes from March 6, 1854 to March 15, 1854, initially as a representative for the Montevideo Department . From February 15, 1855, he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies as a representative of the Department of Canelones and in that year he held the office of President of the Chamber. His second titular mandate ended on February 14, 1858. Later, the PhD Magariños Cervantes was a member of the Court of Appeal , of which he was appointed President in 1865. In 1868 he made his way to France, where he assumed the function of consul general and business agent until his return in 1872 . Later, Magariños Cervantes held a titular mandate as senator in the Cámara de Senadores as representative of the Montevideo Department in the 12th legislative period from February 14, 1876 to February 22, 1876 . This was followed by a second term as Foreign Minister from February 22, 1876 to March 10, 1876. In 1880 Magariños Cervantes was initially "Fiscal de Hacienda" and in 1881 he was Minister of Government, but resigned from office because of differences of opinion with President Máximo Santos .
