Material group management

Material group management (MGM) is an instrument of modern purchasing organization. In contrast to sales- oriented product group management , materials and services are structured according to the procurement market in material group management . Based on this, procurement strategies for material and supplier are defined for the respective company in interdisciplinary teamwork and measures to improve the contribution to earnings or reduce costs in purchasing per material are developed.

history

The first approaches to material group management were made around 25 years ago. However, it can be assumed that this instrument did not gain acceptance and widespread use until the turn of the millennium. There are now more extensive approaches that add a strategic component to the concept of material group management. Above all, this includes material cost management, in which the progress made in processing the purchasing volume, similar to the overall system effectiveness often used in production , can be represented using various parameters and expressed as a percentage of a maximum value.

method

A prerequisite for material group management is a person named and responsible for the respective group (material group manager). The material group manager is responsible for all activities related to the material field. Such specialization guarantees comprehensive technical and procurement-related competence.

The general procedure is divided into three steps:

  • Structuring the procurement volume into meaningful categories
  • Analysis of purchasing volumes based on historical data including the preparation of a demand forecast
  • Strategy definition for the considered product groups in interdisciplinary workshops

The strategy definition, in which at least the following tasks should be dealt with, is essential for the success of the project:

  • Coordination of all procurement processes
  • constant optimization of communication between material and supplier data
  • Coordination of stocks and material flow
  • Analysis of the procurement markets that are important for the material groups
  • Analysis and design of the procurement processes for the material groups

In addition, the standardization of the procurement range and the bundling of purchasing requirements are often named as essential (sub) tasks.
Typical advantages of MGM are lower process costs , lower purchase prices, an optimized article / supplier portfolio ( supplier structure ) and better supplier performance.

The material group management thus deviates significantly from the classic purchasing optimization, the sole aim of which is to achieve the lowest price for a material . The MGM significantly enhances the role of the buyer in that he is considered a manager for systematic material cost optimization, instead of being solely responsible for the procurement of goods with specifications given by the users .

A methodical extension of the MGM is the material cost management (MKM), in which the success of the initiative is measured against potentially achievable target / marginal costs. Material cost management can therefore also be used as a strategic control instrument and for the definition of long-term goals.
