from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mateus Maia is an Indonesian - East Timorese official and politician.

Career

Maia campaigned for the integration of East Timor in Indonesia as early as 1975. Originally head of the planning department of the regional office for mining in East Timor, he finally became mayor ( Indonesian Walikota ) of the capital Dili in 1996 . he held this office until the Indonesians left in 1999.

A few days before the independence referendum in East Timor on August 30, 1999 , Domingos Maria das Dores Soares , the head of several pro-Indonesian militias , invited the local chiefs of the Dili district to a meeting. Dili's mayor Mateus Maia stated that if the majority of the citizens did not vote for the autonomy of East Timor within Indonesia, “blood would flow into Dili”. The majority of the population opted for the complete independence of East Timor. After the results were published on September 4th, the pro-Indonesian militias marched through the city, pillaging and killing. At least 67 people died and around half of the buildings were damaged. Only the intervention of INTERFET ended the bloodshed. Indonesian security forces and supporters left the country.

Maia left East Timor. He became an employee of the mayor of the Indonesian Denpasar ( Bali ) and the Kesbangpol (Office for National and Political Unity). He is also active in the East Timorese supporters of a connection to Indonesia. Maia became a member of the Timor Aswain University (UNTAS). Today he is Chairman of UNTAS in Bali (as of 2016).
