Mateus Palace

The Mateus Palace is located in Mateus in Portugal , approx. 5 kilometers from Vila Real .

The oldest document showing an estate here dates from 1488. The owner of the land had a first mansion built here after his marriage in 1541 , which was expanded and changed several times by the following generations. Today's baroque palace was built around 1743. The architect was Nicolau Nasoni , the owner of the palace was the nobleman António José Botelho Mourão .

The palace is also known for its large park. In the park there is a pond with a nymph - a marble sculpture by José Cutileiro . The Mateus Palace has a library and living rooms that can be viewed. Oil paintings and cabinets with oriental dishes are part of the interior of the palace. Near the palace there is an 18th century baroque chapel .

The Mateus Palace is shown on the labels of the mass wine Mateus Rosé , for which he was only the namesake.
