Mateus is a semi-dry to sweet, slightly moussierender , rose wine from Portugal . As a bulk wine, 50 million bottles, which are mainly sold through supermarkets, are sold annually in 125 countries.

Fernando Van Zeller Guedes, a Vinho Verde - winery from Vila Real in the Douro -Tal, brought in 1942, the Mateus in the characteristic bulbous bottle, the shape of the canteens of the First World War was inspired to market. He borrowed the name of the wine from Mateus Castle near Vila Real, which is still depicted on the Mateus labels today. The main production of Mateus Rosé takes place today in Anadia in the Bairrada wine region .

The wine is marketed by Sogrape , the largest wine trading company in Portugal.

Mateus Rosé is a favorite wine of Elizabeth II and this wine was stored in the cellars of Saddam Hussein's palaces .
