Nicolau Nasoni , originally Niccolò Nasoni , (born June 2, 1691 in San Giovanni Valdarno , † August 30, 1773 in Porto ) was an Italian architect , painter and decorator who mainly worked in Portugal . He did his work in the Baroque and Rococo ages .

biography

Nasoni was born in the Tuscan town of San Giovanni Valdarno , in the province of Arezzo , to Giuseppe di Francesco and Margherita Rosi. He lived in Siena, where he devoted himself to architecture for the first time with Giuseppe Nicola Nasini (1657–1736). In the cathedral of Siena he built a catafalk for Ferdinand de 'Medici and a triumphal arch in honor of the new archbishop . While working for the Opera del Duomo , he studied architecture and painting.

He then worked as a painter in Rome and Malta. Nasoni worked for the parade of the new Grand Master of the Order of Malta . He was also responsible for decorating the corridors and ceilings of the Palazzo Magistrale in Valletta .

Nasoni went to Portugal in 1723 and worked there, especially in Porto, until the end of his life. There he renovated the cathedral of Porto . In 1731 he was commissioned with the planning of the new Igreja dos Clérigos (Church of the Clergy ), the construction of which he directed until it was completed in 1763. After his death in 1773, he was there in the crypt buried .
