Mathias Frickel (born May 9, 1833 in Bonn ; † March 16, 1911 there ) was a German painter.

resume

Frickel was the son of a baker who had come to Bonn from Sayn and married here. The father also successfully ran a pub, which he was soon able to acquire. How these learned the son of the bakery trade and made his own . Frickel lived in the United States of America from 1873 to 1875. After his return he worked as a private secretary. In 1886 he married the daughter of a gardener from Endenich. They had a daughter together.

Frickel's hobby was painting. Images from America, the Danube, the Rhine, Ahr and Moselle are known. He had never attended a painting school and his works cannot be assigned to any school or fashion. However, he documented exactly what interested him.

As an early member of the Bonn Homeland and History Association , known at the time as "Old Bonn" , Frickel showed his ties to his native Bonn . Like many cities, Bonn also experienced a major change in the cityscape in the second half of the 19th century. It is noticeable that Frickel mostly painted buildings and streets in Bonn that no longer exist today. He noted demolition dates and changes. Sometimes he added the history of the house. Frickel became a documentary about the “Old Bonn” and the association paid tribute to his great services.

Frickel died in 1911 and was buried in Bonn's north cemetery. His views on Bonn probably came to the Bonn City Archives via the association; the majority of his work is still in the family's possession.
