Life

Mathias Grasel already wanted to become a lawyer as a high school graduate. He began studying law at the University of Konstanz in 2004 . In the following year he moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he completed his studies in 2009. This was followed by a legal clerkship at the Munich Higher Regional Court. After passing the 2nd state examination, he was admitted to the bar in 2011 and has been a member of the Munich Bar Association since then. In 2015, this awarded him the additional title of specialist lawyer for criminal law .

Even during his studies, he was interested in criminal law. Initially employed as a lawyer in a Munich law firm, he went into business for himself and joined an office community.

NSU trial

On July 6, 2015, the Munich Higher Regional Court appointed him as Beate Zschäpe's fourth public defender in the NSU trial after there had previously been tensions with her previous three public defenders, Wolfgang Heer , Wolfgang Stahl and Anja Sturm . Since then he has taken part in the main hearing before the 6th criminal senate of the Munich Higher Regional Court, sometimes supported by his colleague Hermann Borchert . Shortly after his appointment, he announced that the defendants were ready to speak. He read Zschäpe's 53-page statement on December 9, 2015, in which she commented on the charges for the first time after more than four years of silence. As part of the closing lecture by Zschäpe's defense in April 2018, Grasel presented the part on the legal assessment and above all pointed to the restrictive case law of the Federal Court of Justice on complicity in the crime.
