Mathieu Le Nain (* 1607 in Laon ; † April 20, 1677 in Paris ) was a French painter of the 17th century. It can be assigned to baroque realism . Together with his two brothers Antoine and Louis , he founded a flourishing workshop in Paris in 1629, but without joining the corporation of painters.

Life

Mathieu Le Nain was the last of the five sons of the farmer, winemaker and “sergent royal” at the salt store in Laon ( Picardy ) Isaac Le Nain. He was trained as a painter in his hometown and as such, with his two brothers in Paris, he achieved a high reputation. At that time you were the only ones who painted peasant scenes in the metropolis of Paris; their works were similar to one another.

In 1648, the three Le Nains were among the first members of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, which had recently been founded .

In May of the same year he lost his two brothers and became their inheritance. From this point on he seems to have devoted himself more to his social advancement than to painting. He called himself “sieur de La Jumelle”, seems to have given up the title “peintre ordinaire du Roy” and was awarded the Ordre de Saint-Michel in 1662 , which was like a rise in the nobility. It is considered possible that for this reason he no longer wanted to be reminded of his earlier “civil” activity of painting and also did not keep the memory of his brothers alive, which could be the reason why the works of the Le Nains in Fell into oblivion. In fact, they were not rediscovered until the mid-19th century by Jules Champfleury .
