Matsumura Keibun ( Japanese 松 村 景 文 ; * 1779 in Kyōto , Japan ; † May 25, 1843 ) was a Japanese painter of the late Edo period .

life and work

Matsumura Keibun was a half-brother of Goshun , the founder of the Shijō school. He studied under Goshin and became an eminent painter of that school. As early as 1796 he showed work at an exhibition by Minagawa Kein ( 皆川 淇 園 ; 1734–1807), which concerned calligraphy and painting. The Heian jimbutsu shi ( 平安 人物 史 ), a list of important people in Kyoto, lists him in the 1813 edition.

Keibun's apartment was west of the intersection of Shijō and Tomo-no-kōji Streets. In 1817, on the seventh anniversary of Goshin's death, he showed an exhibition of Goshin's works. In 1829 he painted a group of birds on the ceiling inside the Naginata-Hoko ( 長刀 鉾 ), one of the floats that were pulled through the streets of Kyoto at the Gion Festival .

In 1830 Keibun published an illustrated book entitled “Go Keibuns Art to paint” ( 呉 景 文 画譜 , Go Keibun gafu ). He continued Goshin's style of painting and took an important position in the establishment of this style. He also worked as the chief priest of Myōhō-in in Kyōto, at a temple that is traditionally headed by an imperial prince. After his death, Keibun was buried first in Daitsū-ji ( 大通 寺 ), but then in the more important Kompuku-ji ( 金 福寺 ) in Kyoto.

Keibun's painting style is very similar to that of Goshun, but it is a little lighter and more mannerist. His best-known work are the paintings on sliding doors (Fusuma-e) in Myōhō-labeled "Rural Tasks in the Four Seasons" ( 四季 耕作 図 , Shiki kōsaku-zu ).
