Matthew John "Matt" Gadsby (born September 6, 1979 in Sutton Coldfield , † September 9, 2006 in Harrogate ) was an English football player.

Career

Gadsby moved up from the youth of FC Walsall in 1998 in the professional squad and made his league debut in the Second Division against the Wycombe Wanderers on May 2, 1998 . In 1999 he rose for the first time with the club in the then second-highest English division . The rise was immediately followed by relegation, with Gadsby only making three league appearances. In 2001 he was on the pitch in all three promotion playoffs for Walsall and thus also experienced the 3-2 success over Reading FC and the associated direct promotion .

The following season he made 22 appearances in the second division, then left the club and moved to Mansfield Town in the third division free of charge , but rose with the club at the end of the season in the Football League Third Division . After relegation, he moved to the local league competitor Kidderminster Harriers in 2003 , with whom he finished in midfield at the end of the season.

For the 2004/05 season Gadsby moved to the non-league football area and played for the Forest Green Rovers in the Conference National . In two years he made a total of 66 league appearances, both times just barely escaped relegation. In 2006 he left the club again and joined Hinckley United , who played in Conference North .

death

On September 9, 2006 Gadsby collapsed during an away game of his club at Harrogate Town in Conference North. Despite several attempts at resuscitation, he later died in Harrogate District Hospital .

The club's subsequent games were canceled after the tragedy and the association allowed the number 5, which Gadsby had worn, to no longer be awarded in the season and instead players with the number 18 appeared in the starting line-up.

In front of the club 's stadium , Marston's Stadium , a memorial area with a condolence book was set up. Gadsby left a wife and daughter.
