Matthew the Potter
Matthew the Potter , also known as Matthew the Poor , is an 8th century Egyptian Christian saint. He was a contemporary of Pope Alexander II (704–729). In the Alexandrian Patriarchal History (sometimes referred to as the History of the Patriarchs ) he is described as a potter, priest and fisherman. According to Abu Salih the Armenian , Matthew could also have been the Coptic Orthodox bishop of the city of Esna . He is the founder of the Monastery of Saint Matthew the Potter .
Life
Saint Matthew the potter originally came from Bishnai in Egypt . He received training as a monk at a young age in the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in al-Maqbabat. After his training, he traveled to Esna and Asfun, where he founded a monastery that is now known as the Monastery of Saint Matthew the Potter.
