Matthew James Canavan (born December 17, 1980 ) is an Australian politician.

Life

Canavan is a member of the Liberal National Party . He was Chief of Staff to former Senator and current MP for the New England constituency, Barnaby Joyce . In the parliamentary elections in Australia in 2013 , he was elected to represent the state of Queensland in the Australian Senate . During Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's first term , Canavan served as Minister for Northern Australia between February and July 2016. His tenure began in 2014.

Following the re-election of the Turnbull government in the 2016 general election in Australia , Canavan was appointed Minister for Resources and Northern Australia to the Cabinet. On July 25, 2017, Canavan resigned from his ministerial office following doubts about his eligibility after learning that he was considered a national of Italy by Italian authorities. Dual citizens may not be elected to parliament or take up their mandate under Article 44 of the Australian Constitution.

Canavan's mother had registered him in 2006 at the Italian consulate in Brisbane as an Italian living abroad . Canavan said she didn't know about it until his mother informed him as a result of reporting on two Australian Green Senators Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters who had resigned because of dual citizenship. The government has taken the position that Canavan did not violate the constitution by filing without his knowledge and consent, and therefore intends to take the matter to court .
