Matthew "Matt" Oakley (born August 17, 1977 in Peterborough , England ) is a former English football player.

Career

Oakley was already and especially in his youth as a great talent and played four games for England with the U21 national team ; In the senior national team, however, he could not advance. He spent most of his career at Southampton FC , for which he played a total of 262 first division games between 1995 and 2006; he was able to achieve 26 goals. With Southampton he also celebrated the greatest success of his career, the entry into the final of the FA Cup . The game played on May 7, 2003, however, was lost 1-0 to Arsenal .

In August 2006, Oakley moved to Derby County on a free transfer; in his first twenty games he scored three goals. There he was promoted to the Premier League . After a disappointing first half of the season, he moved from bottom of the table for 500,000 pounds to the then second list Leicester City, with which he was relegated to the third division in the same season. However, the team stayed there only for one season and rose directly back to the second division. In the 2009/10 season, Leicester finished fifth in the table and qualified for the first play-off round. In this, however, Oakley failed with his club after two games on penalties at Cardiff City and thus missed promotion to the Premier League.
