Matthew Taylor (* 1964 in London ) is a British composer and conductor .

Life

Taylor entered the Junior Royal Academy of Music at the age of twelve and received his first composition lessons there. He later continued his studies at Queens' College in Cambridge with Robin Holloway , as well as at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music . In 1984 he met the composer Robert Simpson , who had a lasting influence on Taylor's musical aesthetics and compositional style.

Taylor studied conducting with Robin Page and Vilem Tausky. In 1987 he was Leonard Bernstein's assistant at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival . Taylor has appeared as a guest conductor with the English Chamber Orchestra , the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the European Community Chamber Orchestra and the Saint Petersburg Academy State Orchestra. He has directed world premieres of works by Vagn Holmboe , Robert Simpson, David Matthews and Francis Brown .

Matthew Taylor is a composition professor at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. He lives in the Battersea neighborhood of south London, is married and has two daughters.

Audio language

Taylor's compositional work consists mainly of instrumental music. He prefers traditional large forms such as symphonies , instrumental concerts and string quartet . His music is written in a freely treated, often dissonant tonality and based on the organic development of forms. In terms of style, Taylor can be located in the environment of Robert Simpson, Vagn Holmboe and Michael Tippett .
