Matthias Eyrl von Eyrsperg (* 1614 in Dillingen on the Danube ; † March 27, 1689 in Wiener Neustadt ) was mayor of Wiener Neustadt.

Life

Matthias Eyrl von Eyrsperg, born in the Swabian town of Dillingen, holds a master's degree in philosophy, was mentioned in a document in Wiener Neustadt in 1642. By marrying wisely, he was accepted into the citizenry of the city. His wife owned a larger house on the corner of Herrengasse and Wiener Strasse and an extensive property, particularly with vineyards. This first marriage was childless.

In 1656 he married his second wife Anna Lucia - a wealthy middle class - and had 15 children with her. The woman died in 1683.

In April 1684 he married his third wife Eleonora Sophia Freiin von Neuhauß - from an impoverished noble house - and had three children with her.

In 1647 he became a member of the inner council. In 1650 he became a chief witness. In 1654 he was superintendent of the city's schools. In 1660 he became treasurer of the upper town. In 1666 he held the office of city judge.

In 1670 he was given the office of mayor, which he held until his death in 1689.

Shortly after he took office, the conspirators Zrinyi and Frankopan, captured in Wiener Neustadt, were executed . The witch trial against the sorceress Afra Schick and the sorcerer Michael Gsöller also falls within his term of office.

In 1679 the city suffered a devastating plague.

A prominent prisoner and his family were quartered in his house in Wiener Neustadt in 1688, Czonka Beg, the commandant of the fortress of Ofen in Turkish service, who was captured by the imperial troops in 1686.

Awards

  • 1666: In recognition of his various offices for the city and, above all, for his services to the city fortifications against the Turks, he was given the title of imperial council and for himself and his descendants the title of nobility <von Eyrsperg>.
  • The Eyrl coat of arms by the councilors' chairs in the north aisle in the cathedral of Wiener Neustadt shows in the four-field shield at the top right and bottom left on a red background a green three-mountain with an egg on top, and an old buffalo horn in the upper left and lower right fields Eyrl's coat of arms.
  • His gravestone is in the north transept of the Wiener Neustadt cathedral.
  • Part of the Wiener Neustadt ring was named after him on October 14, 1890.
