Matthias Kaiser (born December 12, 1955 ) was a soccer player in the GDR Oberliga , the highest East German soccer league. He played there for BSG Wismut Gera and FC Carl Zeiss Jena .

Athletic career

In 1965 Matthias Kaiser joined the children's department of the soccer section of the company sports association (BSG) Wismut Gera. After completing his school education, he completed an apprenticeship as an electronics technician. In the 1976/77 season he was part of the GDR league team, which had achieved promotion to the league after several attempts. The 1.70 m tall Kaiser was involved in this success with 16 stakes and two goals. In the following league season Wismut Gera was with 21 defeats, four draws and only one win to the worst relegation in the history of the league. Only Kaiser and his midfield partner Harald Irmscher played all 26 point games, with Kaiser without a goal.

After relegation Kaiser moved to the upper division club FC Carl Zeiss Jena, but did not get beyond the role of a substitute player. In addition, between 1980 and 1981 his career was interrupted by 18 months of military service. Kaiser had his best season at FC Carl Zeiss in 1981/82, when he played 18 league games, mostly as a midfielder. After he had only played six league games in the 1982/83 season up to the 11th matchday, only three of them over the full time, Kaiser was delegated back to BSG Wismut Gera at the end of 1982. During his four seasons in Jena, he made 41 competitive games with two goals. 37 of these were league games with two goals and two appearances each in the national and European cups (1983).

At Wismut Gera, Kaiser played in the GDR league again from the beginning of 1983. At the end of 1986 Kaiser ended his career as a competitive footballer at the age of 31.
