Matthias Klopfer (born March 14, 1968 in Stuttgart ) is a German SPD politician . Since October 2, 2006 he has been Lord Mayor of the city of Schorndorf .

Life and work

Matthias Klopfer grew up in Renningen , district of Böblingen , and studied political and sports science as well as geography at the University of Stuttgart after graduating from high school . After completing his studies, he initially worked as a research assistant at the University of Stuttgart. At the same time, he worked as a lecturer in the training of sports teachers and advised municipalities on issues relating to sports and youth policy. From May 1996 to February 1998 he worked for the member of parliament Stephan Braun as a personal assistant before he then became the full-time SPD election campaign manager for the 2001 state elections in Baden-Württemberg. From 2001 until his election as mayor in Schorndorf in 2006, he was managing director of the SPD parliamentary group in Baden-Württemberg.

On July 30, 2006 Matthias Klopfer was elected Lord Mayor of Schorndorf in the second ballot with around 50.8 percent of the votes cast and thus prevailed against Joachim Scholz . On July 6, 2014, Matthias Klopfer was re-elected Lord Mayor of this city in the first ballot with a turnout of 29.4 percent with 76.5 percent of the votes.

After the resignation of the previous incumbent, Wolfgang Dietrich , Klopfer announced in July 2019 that he would run for the office of honorary president of VfB Stuttgart at the general meeting on December 15, 2019 .
