Matthias Perl
Matthias Perl (born April 16, 1948 in Leipzig ) is a German linguist , Lusitanist and Hispanist .
Academic career
Perl studied from 1966 to 1971 at the University of Leipzig , where he also received his doctorate in 1973 . He then worked at the University of Leipzig as a research assistant or senior assistant. In 1982, he was in the fields Lusitanistics and Hispano American and the Facultas docendi of Romance linguistics at the University of Leipzig habilitation . In 1985 he was appointed professor for Afrolusitan and Creole studies at the University of Leipzig. From 1992 Perl was Professor of Romance Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where he retired in 2011.
He had teaching positions and visiting professorships at the Universidad de La Habana, Universidad de Las Villas in Santa Clara (Cuba), at the Free University of Berlin, at the Universidad de Costa Rica in San José and at the Universidad de los Andes in Mérida (Venezuela) . Research stays led him a. a. to Costa Rica, Curaçao (Netherlands Antilles), the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Venezuela. Perl was the organizer of various international conferences a. a. the 4th German Lusitanist Day 2001 in Germersheim / Rhine. There he also directed the Latin America Center CELA.
From 1991 to 1995 he was vice chairman of the German Hispanic Association.
Publications
Perl is the author of publications on the topics of valence grammar , Afrolusitan studies, Iberoroman and English Creole languages in Asia, Africa and America, language contacts in Latin America and Africa, Spanish in America, language policy in lusophone Africa and the Caribbean, Cuba, Suriname, missionary linguistics , language and courtesy, Brazilian Portuguese. He is co-founder of the journal Revista Internacional de Lingüística Iberoamericana and is active on scientific advisory boards of journals in Brazil, Costa Rica, Macau and Spain. Perl supervised 11 doctoral candidates and several DAAD scholarship holders from Latin America.
