Matthias Waldraff (born May 1, 1952 in Aalen ) is a German lawyer who has become known through sensational mandates. In the mayor election in Hanover in 2013 he applied to succeed Stephan Weil , but lost to Stefan Schostok in the runoff election .

education and profession

He attended the elementary school in Großburgwedel until 1968 and then the grammar school Großburgwedel up to secondary school. In 1972 he passed his Abitur at the business school in Hanover. The Bundeswehr trained as a reserve officer in the Air Force from 1972 to 1974. In 1974 he enrolled at the University of Hanover, studied social sciences for two semesters and switched to law in 1975. In 1981 he received the second state examination in law.

He became known in 1999 when he filed a criminal complaint against former Chancellor Helmut Kohl on suspicion of infidelity. He took on mandates in cases that attracted strong media attention. This included, for example, the case of cancer doctor Mechthild Bach or Marco Weiss from Uelzen, who was imprisoned in Turkey . He also represents the alleged rapist and murderer Frederike von Möhlmanns .

Waldraff announced on March 1, 2013 that he would run for the CDU as candidate for mayor in the state capital of Hanover . In the first round of the mayoral election on September 22, 2013, he achieved second place with 33.8% of the votes behind the SPD candidate Stefan Schostok (48.9%). In the runoff election on October 6, 2013, Waldraff lost 33.7% to Schostok.

In protest against attacks by the parliamentary director of the CDU faction in the Lower Saxony state parliament , Jens Nacke , against the Lower Saxony judiciary , Waldraff announced his resignation from the CDU in September 2014.
