Mayor since 1996

There has been a full-time mayor since 1996, who is also the head of administration. After Stephan Weil was elected Minister-President of Lower Saxony on February 19, 2013 , his term of office as Lord Mayor ended. In the following period, the office was temporarily held by the 1st mayor Bernd Strauch as the city's representative and the first city councilors Hans Mönninghoff (until the end of July) and Sabine Tegtmeyer-Dette (from August 1, 2013) as head of administration. On October 6, 2013, Stefan Schostok (SPD) was elected Lord Mayor of Hanover in a runoff election. He was sworn in on October 24, 2013. At his request and with the approval of the City Council of Hanover, the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior retired him with effect from May 26, 2019.

The new election was set by the city council for October 27, 2019, as there was no candidate with an absolute majority, a runoff had to decide. This run-off election took place on November 10, 2019 between Belit Onay (Alliance 90 / Greens) and Eckhard Scholz (CDU), according to the preliminary final result, Belit Onay won with 52.9% of the votes.
