Bernhard Homeister , even Hohmeister or Hofmeister , (* 1538, † 13. July 1614 ) was Mayor of Hannover , author and historian , as well as major donor of library - archives .

Life

family

Bernhard Homeister was the son of the mayor Bartold Homeister and, like him, comes from the Hans Hovemeister mentioned in the oldest house book of the city of Hanover and his “ wife Anna, possibly from the Volger family”. Bernhard Homeister was married to a daughter of Mayor Heiso Grove .

Career

Like his father, Bernhard Homeister attended school in Wittenberg from 1551 to 1555 and then studied at the University of Wittenberg until 1559. He then went to Speyer , stayed there until 1591 and was given a notary's office in the same year .

Back in his hometown of Hanover, Homeister was elected a jury in 1771 , in 1574 as "Fire Lord" (until 1579), and in 1581 again as a jury member. After the death of his father-Homeister 1587 was elected mayor and again confirmed in this position until 1610, until it on November 29, 1611 resigned .

Homeister died childless around four weeks after his wife and was - like his father - buried in the old St. Nikolai cemetery in Hanover. Christian Ulrich Grupen still knew his gravestone .

Estate and Importance

Bernhard Homeister was the first Hanoverian to leave a diary . His “Diarium gestae” for the years 1550 to 1591 were published in 1860 as “Notes on the history of the city of Hanover ”.

However, Homeister was best known for his handwritten , 87-volume estate of an encyclopedic collection in the fields of history, geography, literature, theology, natural sciences, philosophy, medicine, astronomy, genealogy and education. The collection together with the library of the Kreuzkirche initially came to the Hanover City Library and from there to the Hanover City Archives .

Some additional volumes by Homeister came to the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel as early as the 18th century , where his “Chronicon Hannoveranum consulis Bernhardi Homeister” is also located, a chronicle that Homeister wrote retrospectively for the period from 784 using the city's official registers until 1614.

Homeister's private library , which is closely related to the book collection, has been incorporated into the council library , which is now part of the Hanover city library.
