August Holweg
August Holweg (born October 21, 1905 in Linden ; † May 21, 1989 in Hanover ) was a German SPD politician .
Life
August Holweg was Lord Mayor of Hanover from 1956 to 1972 . He played a key role in the expansion of the Herrenhausen Gardens , the establishment of the Medical School in 1961, the construction of the Hanover city railway in 1965 and the construction of the Historical Museum on the Hohe Ufer in 1966. During his tenure, several dozen schools, numerous gyms, baths, day-care centers and Old people's homes built, social housing was promoted. The expansion of the tangent expressways, elevated roads and the expansion of the zoo also fall within his term of office.
August Holweg rests in a grave of honor at the Ricklingen city cemetery . On January 26, 1972, he was given honorary citizenship by the Hanover City Council.
