Wilhelm Rumann
Rudolph Wilhelm Philipp Rumann (born July 18, 1784 in Celle ; † October 18, 1857 in Hanover ) was a politician in the Kingdom of Hanover and city director of Hanover from 1824 to 1843.
Life
The Rumann family belonged to the so-called pretty families in the 18th and 19th centuries .
As the son of the Hanoverian Justice Minister Ernst August Rumann , Rudolph Wilhelm Philipp Rumann embarked on a legal career. After studying law in Göttingen from 1801 to 1804, he first became court and chancellery advisor. From 1813 he was police director in Hanover. In 1824 Rumann was elected city director of the combined old and new town. From 1826 to 1837 he was a member of the second chamber of the Hanoverian assembly of estates , from 1833 its president.
During his tenure as city director, he ensured an improvement in the poor system, a restructuring of the school system, the inauguration of Waterloo Square and the Waterloo Column (1832), the renovation of the Aegidienkirche (1826-1828) and the construction of a hospital (later the Linden Dermatology Clinic ). Furthermore, under Rumann, Hanover was the first European city to receive gas lighting. In 1843 Rumann retired after lengthy disputes. Rumann died on October 18, 1857. His grave is in the garden cemetery .
The chamber director of the Hanover domain chamber , August Heinrich Rumann, was his brother.
Honors
Rumannstrasse in the Oststadt district, which was laid out in 1873, honors the former city director with its name.
