Bernd Strauch
Bernd Strauch (born April 8, 1949 in Anderten ; † September 28, 2015 in Hanover ) was a German politician ( SPD ). From 1996 to 2014 he was the mayor of Hanover, chairman of the city council and first deputy mayor .
Life
Strauch's father was a machinist , his mother a flatworker. He trained as an industrial clerk , did trade union work, caught up with secondary school leaving certificates and high school diplomas to study teaching. Bernd Strauch was a special education teacher by profession . In 1981 he became a member of the Misburg-Anderten district council . From 1986 to June 2014 Bernd Strauch was a member of the City Council of Hanover and, from 1996, Mayor of the City of Hanover and thus (first) Deputy Mayor, he was also Chairman of the Council of the City of Hanover. In 18 years as council chairman, he chaired more than 150 council meetings. He was chairman of the migration committee and a member of the administrative and personnel committee. He also headed the Local Crime Prevention Council (KKP) as chairman. With Stephan Weil leaving the office of Lord Mayor at the beginning of 2013 until the election of Stefan Schostok in October 2013, Strauch was the highest representative of the city of Hanover. At the beginning of June 2014 he announced his resignation from all political offices at the council meeting on June 19, 2014. His successor in the offices of mayor and council chairman was Thomas Hermann .
Bernd Strauch was married to Ulrike. They have two children together. He lived in Hanover-Anderten . In his private life he cultivated jazz ; active as a drummer , for example of the Bernd Strauch Trio and from 2004 to 2015 as chairman of the Jazz Club Hannover .
The city of Hanover said goodbye to Bernd Strauch on October 15, 2015 with a funeral service in the Marktkirche , attended by around 900 people, and a reception in the New Town Hall . The funeral followed on October 16, 2015 with close family and friends.

Bernd-Strauch-Weg
On March 22, 2017, Bernd Strauch's frequently used “favorite path” in the Hanover district of Anderten was named after the deceased Council Chairman and First Mayor. The unveiling of the street sign with a separately attached legend board - installed at the intersection of the Spreeweg and Wasserweg above Friedrich-Wilhelm-Fitzner-Weg - took place in the presence of District Mayor Klaus Dickneite , Lord Mayor Stefan Schostok , Herbert Schmalstieg , companions and the family.
