Thomas Hermann (* 1958 in Hanover ) is a German politician ( SPD ). Since June 19, 2014 he has been mayor of the city of Hanover, chairman of the city council and first deputy mayor .

Thomas Hermann attended the Peter-Petersen School (today Südstadtschule) and was a student at the Tellkampf School in Hanover from 1968 to 1976 . He then did his basic military service and completed a traineeship with a sports newspaper. From 1979 to 1986 Hermann studied social sciences (political science, sociology, social psychology, economics) at the University of Hanover (today's Leibniz University of Hanover). From 1987 to 1997 Thomas Hermann worked as a research assistant (research and teaching) at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Hanover. Since 1998 he has worked in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs , initially as a personal advisor to the minister, then from 1999 to 2000 as head of the minister's office. Since 2000 he has worked as a consultant for civic engagement and self-help in the ministry.

Hermann has been a member of the Hanover City Council since 2001 and was spokesman for building policy for his parliamentary group from 2002. He was one of the deputy chairmen of his parliamentary group and was a member of the committees for urban development and building (speaker), sport and for budget, finance and auditing (chairman). On June 19, 2014, the Hanover City Council elected him Mayor and Chairman of the City Council. As chairman of the Committee for Integration, Europe and International Cooperation (also known as the International Committee ), he is a member of the Administrative Committee . He is chairman of the municipal prevention council of the state capital Hanover. He is also a member of the executive committee of the SPD parliamentary group in the council and is a member of the executive committee of the SPD Südstadt-Bult , which he chaired from 1997 to 2011. Between 1991 and 1999 he was a member of the board of the SPD city association of Hanover.

After the municipal elections in Lower Saxony in 2016 , Thomas Hermann was once again elected by the members of the City Council of Hanover as council chairman and honorary deputy to Mayor Stefan Schostok ; in front of Klaus Dieter Scholz ( CDU ) and Regine Kramarek ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ).

Thomas Herman is married and has two children.

Since 2006 he has been chairman of the municipal housing company hanova WOHNEN GmbH and since 2013 deputy chairman of the supervisory board of hanova GEWERBE GmbH (formerly union-boden GmbH). Thomas Hermann is a member of the board of trustees of the Aegidienkirche . Since September 10, 2015 he has been chairman of the Jazz Club Hannover . He is the ambassador of the Unesco City of Music Hannover. He is a member of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt, Verdi and Wikimedia ev. He is also a member of the Forum for Politics and Culture eV, the Association of Friends of the Herrenhausen Gardens and the Volunteer Center Hannover eV
