Matthias von Gunten (* 1953 in Basel ) is a Swiss film director , film producer and screenwriter .

Life

Von Gunten received a film training at the University of Television and Film Munich . His graduation film was Quelle Günther , an 80-minute feature film that premiered at the Solothurn Film Festival. After a few years in Berlin, von Gunten returned to Switzerland. Since 1980 he has worked as a film editor, cameraman and assistant director. He worked on films in Switzerland and Germany. He has been a freelance film director and film producer since 1995.

He won film awards with the film Reisen ins inland (1988). His essay film Max Frisch, Citoyen was published by Suhrkamp Verlag (filmedition: ISBN 978-3-518-13513-6 ). In 2011, on the occasion of Max Frisch's hundredth birthday, he made a 50-minute essay film for Swiss television about Max Frisch's failed attempt to make a film about his Zurich-Transit film: Max Frisch: Zurich-Transit .

In 2014 he released ThuleTuvalu , a documentary set in Thule (North Greenland) and Tuvalu (a Pacific island nation) and about how people's lives are fundamentally changing because of global warming in both places: in Thule, because the ice , which the Inuit have inhabited for 2000 years, is declining more and more, in Tuvalu because the sea is rising more and more because of the melting ice at the poles of the earth.
