Matti Raekallio

Matti Juhani Raekallio (born October 14, 1954 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish pianist.

Raekallio studied at the Turku Conservatory and at the London, Vienna and Leningrad Conservatories. He received his PhD in historical fingering from the Sibelius Academy Helsinki in 2007; he is also an honorary doctor of the Estonian Academy of Music.

Raekallio made his American debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1981 . Since then he has appeared regularly as a soloist with well-known American orchestras, but then expanded his concert activities to Europe and Asia. He recorded about 20 albums, including all of Prokofiev's piano sonatas.

Reakallio also taught at the Sibelius Academy (since 1996 as a professor); In 2005 he moved to the Hanover University of Music and Drama as a university lecturer . In 2007 he was offered a call to the Juilliard School of Music in New York; at times he held these three positions at the same time. He also taught master classes in Japan, Israel and the USA; many of the winners of international competitions are among his students.
