The Mattilsynet (German: Nutrition Supervision ) is the Norwegian food supervisory authority . Your job is to ensure safe food and safe drinking water . She is also responsible for plant and animal health . The authority is subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food , but its departments are obliged to provide information to three ministries: the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ministry of Economics and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare .

history

The Mattilsynet was founded in 2003 with the aim of maintaining a uniform management of food production. In 2004 it took over the tasks of the former Agricultural Inspectorate ( Statens landbrukstilsyn ), the Animal Health Inspectorate ( States dyrehelsetilsyn ), the Food Inspectorate ( Statens næringsmiddeltilsyn ), the oversight of the Fiskeridirektoratet and the local food inspectorate .

In 2015 the agency was reorganized and a main office and five regional branches were established. The local branches were assigned the supervisory tasks, while the head office is responsible for coordination and complaints.

After research by the Norwegian broadcaster Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK), which revealed that an assessment of a fur farm by the Mattilsynet had not been carried out correctly, the authorities investigated more closely. Weaknesses in the knowledge of the rules, organization and communication were identified. The then head of administration, Harald Gjein, resigned from his post due to the research.

organization

The Mattilsynet consists of the headquarters in Oslo and five regional offices. On behalf of Mattilysnet, the Vitenskapskomiteen for mattrygghet (VKM for short; German: Science Committee for Food Safety ) prepares scientific analyzes for food safety, animal and plant health and cosmetics. The VKM is the official contact point for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
