Maud Perceval Allen (* 1880 in Ripley , County Derbyshire , † December 1955 in London ) was an English concert, oratorio and opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Allen received her training from the singing teacher William Shakespeare in London. In 1905 she made her debut in a concert in London with the London Symphony Orchestra . Then she had an important career as a concert and oratorio singer in England.

She rarely appeared on stage; so she sang her debut role in 1908 at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden in London, Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung under Hans Richter , in 1910 the same role under Sir Thomas Beecham . In 1910 she performed the Lia in the staged premiere of Claude Debussy's L'Enfant prodigue at the Covent Garden Opera , also under Beecham.

In 1913 she made a guest appearance with the Quinlan Opera Company in Australia as Brünnhilde in the Ring of the Nibelung (in performances in English). She also traveled to North America with the Quinlan Opera Company, but apart from Brünnhilde she sang only a few stage roles, including a. the Erda in the Ring cycle, the Brangäne in Tristan and Isolde and the lead role in the opera Ivanhoe by Arthur Sullivan . She guested u. a. in Chicago , Philadelphia and Boston .

In 1913/14 she completed a world tour which brought her great success. Later in her career she devoted herself entirely to concert singing.

The artist left a wealth of records; these appeared on G&T from 1901, including the first recordings made by a singer in the title role of Richard Strauss ' opera Elektra .
