Maunalua Bay is a bay in the southeast of Honolulu , the capital of Hawaii . The bay extends for about ten kilometers from the southern tip of Diamond Head , the Black Point, also called Kupikipikio , in the west to Portlock Point, also called Kwaihoa Point , in the east.

On the land side, east of Diamond Head, is the posh suburb of Kahala . This is followed by several hillside, affluent suburbs such as Loa Ridge , a gated community that claims an entire hillside. To the east is the suburb of Hawaii Kai , built around fish ponds by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser after the Second World War , where there is a marina, shopping centers, including a branch of Costco , and numerous restaurants such as the famous Roy's and an offshoot of the Hawaiian brewery Kona Brewing Co. are located. On the headland leading to Koko Head is the suburb of Portlock, which is part of Hawaii Kai.

The name Maunalua (from Mauna = mountain and elua = two, in the language of the Polynesian natives) refers to the name of the area around Hawaii Kai at the time of the Polynesian settlement. The mountains here are the upcountry from Portlock Point 196 meter high Koko Head and about three and a half kilometers to the east beyond the Hanauma Bay located Koko Crater , whose walls up to 368 meters rise.

Legend has it that Maunalua was one of the first settlements when the first Polynesian people came to Hawaii around the 12th century. They originally lived there from fishing and growing sweet potatoes .
