General Maung Aye ( Burmese မောင် အေ ; born December 25, 1937 in Kon Balu , Sagaing Division, Burma ) is a former Myanmar officer and politician . He was Deputy Chairman of the State Council for Peace and Development from 1994 to 2011 .

Maung Aye struck after studying at the Academy of Armed Forces in Pyin U Lwin (formerly Maymyo), which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1959 , the officer career in the army.

In 1993 he was assigned to Rangoon with the rank of lieutenant general and appointed deputy commander in chief of the armed forces. In 1994 he took over the post of deputy chairman of the military junta, which had been vacant since Than Shwe came to power , which at that time still served as the State Councilor for the Restoration of Law and Order (SLORC) . Equipped with these functions, he was after Generalissimo Than Shwe the number 2 of the regime in Myanmar, which appeared under the name State Council for Peace and Development , without holding a government office. On March 30, 2011, Than Shwe dissolved the junta according to the constitution, which was completed in 2008 after 15 years, which also meant the end of Maung Aye's term in office.

Maung Aye was seen as an opponent of the long-time First Secretary of the junta and former Prime Minister Khin Nyunt and, like Than Shwe, a hardliner who refuses to make any concessions to the democratic opposition. In contrast to Than Shwe, who is said to wince at the mention of her name, he was said to have had comparatively good contacts with the long-standing opposition leader and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi .

Maung Aye is said to have been sick for a long time. In 2003 he was in Singapore for prostate cancer treatment . He is also known to be a heavy drinker. He is married to Daw Mya Mya San.
