Jean Maurice Tourneux ( July 12, 1849 Paris , † January 13, 1917 in Paris) was a French biographer , historian , author and publisher .

Life

He was the son of the artist and author JFE Tourneux and attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand . In 1866 he joined the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée as archivist . He later worked on the new edition of the Supercheries littéraires by Joseph Marie Quérard and the Dictionnaire des anonymes by Antoine-Alexandre Barbier .

In April 1872 he published his first article ( L'Amateur d'autographes ). This was also the beginning of a very fruitful collaboration and a long friendship with Marin-Étienne Charavay (1848–1899).

Tourneux was president of the Société de l'histoire de Paris et de l'Île-de-France . On November 12, 1912, he was appointed officer of the French Legion of Honor .

Together with Jules Assézat , he is considered to be one of the most important academic publishers of the 19th century for the complete works of Denis Diderot , Assézat-Tourneux des œuvres complètes de Denis Diderot . The work edition was published in 20 volumes by Éditions Garnier Frères in Paris in 1875 and was also referred to as the Assézat Tourneux edition.
