Mauricius of Trier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mauricius (also Mauritius ) († after 419) was Bishop of Trier since 398/399 .

Almost nothing is known about Bishop Mauricius. After the resignation of Bishop Felix , he was elected bishop in 398/399. His episcopate fell in a time of political upheaval. Augusta Treverorum had lost its function as an imperial residence at the end of the 4th century; the Gallic Praetorian prefecture had been moved to Arles . Since 410 there have been invasions of the Teutons in the Trier area.

The importance of the Trier church declined against this background. Nevertheless, it still had validity beyond the narrower area. Mauricius is considered the recipient of a letter from Boniface I on matters relating to the Church of Arles. Besides those directly affected, he is the only addressee. It is unclear how long he was bishop. In 419 he was still in office.
