The Mauritius Church in Rommelshausen

The Protestant Mauritius Church in Kernen im Remstal is located in the center of the Rommelshausen district. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the old town hall and the rectory.

history

Rommelskirchen was a pastor as early as 1275, and a church dedicated to St. Mauritius is documented as early as 1408 . The tower choir, the oldest part of today's church, was built earlier, probably in the 14th century. With the Reformation in the Duchy of Württemberg in 1534, the church became Protestant.

There have been many renovations and alterations, including an extension to the north at the beginning of the 17th century. By 1830 the church was so dilapidated that it was decided to demolish the nave and the spire. Three designs for the construction of the new church followed. On July 11, 1843, the building project was approved and started. The new church was consecrated on September 7, 1844.

In 1954 the church was renovated inside. The neo-Gothic decorations have been removed, the altar has been replaced and the paintings have been restored. Another extensive renovation, including replacing the benches, took place in 1985/86.

Description of the church

The nave of the church is rectangular and the tower is square. The main portal is on the west side. At the portal there is a memorial for those who fell in the First World War .

The nave is designed in the style of a three-aisled basilica .
