The Mautturm in Winklern is a formerly medieval tower-like aristocratic residence that was built around 1300 and was expanded in the third quarter of the 19th century. The name toll tower comes from modern times. The toll tower is the landmark of the market town in the Spittal an der Drau district in Upper Carinthia and adorns its coat of arms.

history

The toll tower was built for the Counts of Görz at an important crossroads - from here roads lead via Iselsberg to East Tyrol and into the gold mining areas in the upper and middle Mölltal - as a residential, defense and toll tower and was probably part of a small castle complex.

In 1317 Otto von Reuntal was named as a fief. The plant later came to Heinrich von der Linden and Wiliburg, Heinrich II. Von Lavant, and in 1460 in the Peace of Pusarnitz to the Habsburgs . In the 18th century the tower was used as a granary and from 1917 as a lookout tower . In 2004 it was rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Jana Revedin with a larch wood steel construction, the "Tauernwurm", through which it is accessible from the outside. Today the tower is used for exhibition purposes.

Building description

The originally late Romanesque / early Gothic building is neatly made of brook and quarry stones, especially granite , and was raised in 1865/67 by the top two floors including the steep hipped roof . The building stands on a ground plan of 9.6 by 7 meters. The wall thickness is ninety centimeters below and about eighty centimeters from the first floor. The exterior is structured by slits of light, Gothic and neo-Gothic pointed arch windows. On the east side of the third floor there is a remarkable group of windows with three small pointed arch openings and oculus , which were created around 1300. In the basement there is a cellar room and an arched side access corridor.

The covered staircase, which was built on the west side of the tower over a water basin, leads to a high entrance on the second floor, which is locked. This is followed by a metal staircase over the stone steps of the tower staircase, which was added to the tower outside of the tower, to the north-facing high entrance. The descent from the tower is via an interior staircase that leads along the side walls over a few intermediate landings to the exit. The interior of the tower is kept open below the top floor and houses various exhibits from a crystal exhibition, which have been illuminated in partially hanging showcases with improved lighting technology since 2014.
