The Federal Press beach from 2003 through 2011. city beach on the Spree without bathing permission in Berlin-Mitte .

Location and facilities

The beach was located near the eponymous federal press conference with a view of the Spree, the Chancellery and Berlin Central Station . The property was bordered in the north by Margarete-Steffin-Strasse and in the south by Kapelle-Ufer . The Alexanderufer ran to the west of the site, and to the east was the Unterbaumstrasse. In total, the beach covered an area of around 5,000 m², on which 120 tons of Brandenburg sand were applied. In the northern area there was a two-storey pavilion with a built-up area of around 480 m², which was divided into a bar on the ground floor with 300 m² and an upper floor with 180 m² covered area and an outdoor terrace of around 90 m². There was also a dance floor, a volleyball field , a children's playground and a large sandy area with beach chairs and seating. Numerous exhibitions and events took place at BundesPresseStrand, such as a photo exhibition by Tagesspiegel entitled Angie on the beach or a sales promotion by Siemens on the occasion of the IFA , where visitors could use a total of 156 washing machines and dryers to do their laundry - an allusion to the Federal Chancellery, which is popularly known as the washing machine.

History and Development

The beach opened in 2003 on Schiffbauerdamm on the right bank of the Spree. It was located between Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus and Kronprinzenbrücke or between the Federal Press Conference building and the Spree. In the following year, the bank on the opposite side of the Spree was used. Because this resulted, among other things, in nuisance for the neighboring day care center of the Bundestag (a mouse plague in the daycare center was associated with improperly stored waste on the federal press beach), the responsible road and green space office in Mitte announced that it would approve the location at this location Year 2005 not to be renewed.

From 2005, the Federal Press Beach therefore used the area north of the Kronprinzenbrücke on the right bank of the Spree, which was no longer directly on the river, but was separated from the water by the chapel bank. Initially there were two smaller swimming pools there, but they were converted into fountains because the health department in Mitte complained about the lack of a water treatment system . In the press, the beach was a popular meeting place for celebrities such as Wolfgang Gerhardt , Franziska van Almsick , Christian Wulff and Barbara Schöneberger . At the same time it was also a tourist attraction. Sometimes it is even referred to as the "most famous city beach in Germany".

The property is owned by the federal government and is required for the new building of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). After the closure, the entire inventory was auctioned. At this point, members of the Occupy movement had set up camp on the site.

The operator of the BundesPresseStrand was the Berlin agency walks + talks under the direction of Johanna Ismayr.
