City beaches (including beach clubs or City Beaches called) are a current trend in the gastronomic landscape of cities. They offer an opportunity for recreation in the city by copying beaches by the sea and recreating the atmosphere of the sea or beach life. The basis for this are embankments of sand , deck chairs , palm trees , raffia , beach chairs or other typical beach accessories.
Real beaches and "instead of beaches"
Models for this urban trend are also "real" beaches by the sea, known as city beaches, such as Copacabana in Rio , the central beach of San Sebastián , the shores of Barcola in Trieste or the city beaches of Stralsund and Wilhelmshaven .
The location of the newly created city beaches in close proximity to the water (usually a more or less large river or lake) helps to create the illusion of staying on a real beach. Sports typical for the beach, such as beach volleyball , boules or beach aerobics , are also sometimes offered. Some of the city beaches also function as a "beach club" and can only be entered after paying an entrance fee. For replacement beaches there are, for. B. in port areas, no bathing opportunities due to bathing bans .
In order to prevent problems of understanding, artificially created beaches in cities are sometimes also referred to as instead of beach (in the sense of "beach substitute ", mainly because of the lack of bathing facilities). Newly created beaches, where officially bathing is allowed, are not "instead beaches".

Cities have already experimented with temporary sand deposits in earlier times.
