Mawlai is a city in the Indian state of Meghalaya . It is the third largest city in Meghalaya by population.

The city is part of the East Khasi Hills district . Mawlai has the status of a Census Town . The city is divided into 1 wards . It had 55,012 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 26,335 were men and 28,677 were women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 93%. Hindus form a minority of around 3%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 91.9%, well above the national average. 96.9% of the population belong to the Scheduled Tribes .
