Max Planck Working Groups for Structural Molecular Biology at the German Electron Synchrotron
The Max Planck Working Groups for Structural Molecular Biology at DESY were research groups of the Max Planck Society that were founded in 1985 to use the possibilities of synchrotron radiation at DESY primarily for structural biology research. Since 1994 the working groups had a common statute and administration. The working groups were closed on July 31, 2011 after the last working group leader retired.
Group leaders are or were:
- Working group on protein dynamics: Hans-Dieter Bartunik
- Cytoskeleton working group: Eckhard Mandelkow
- Ribosome Structure Working Group: Ada Yonath ( Group leader from 1986 to 2004)
Ada Yonath received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for her work on the structure elucidation of ribosomes . In addition to her work in Hamburg, Yonath also worked at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot.
