The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) was founded in 2012 and started work in 2013. It is one of the institutes of the Max Planck Society and is represented there in the humanities, social and human sciences sections. The institute is based in Frankfurt am Main .

The institute emerged in part from the Languages ​​of Emotion cluster at the Free University of Berlin . The founding directors are Winfried Menninghaus ( Language and Literature Department ) and Melanie Wald-Fuhrmann ( Music Department ). The head of the third department of neurosciences is the German-American neurobiologist David Poeppel . An experimental psychologist is still wanted. Taste is explored through questioning, observing and measuring .
