Max Miedinger (born December 24, 1910 in Zurich ; † March 8, 1980 there ) was a Swiss graphic artist and typographer . He is best known for designing the Helvetica font .

From 1926 to 1930 he trained as a typesetter at the Bollmann book printing company in Zurich and then went to the Zurich School of Applied Arts . From 1936 to 1946 he worked as a graphic designer for the Globus department store chain . Then he moved to Haas'schen Schriftgiesserei in Münchenstein near Basel , for which he worked as a customer advisor and salesman until 1956.

From 1956 he worked as a freelance graphic artist and in the same year received the order from the director of the Haas'sche type foundry to design a new sans serif . In 1957 Miedinger delivered the Neue Haas Grotesk in a semi-bold cut, followed by the lean cut in 1958 and the bold cut in 1959. The typeface became quickly successful and was sold internationally as Helvetica in 1960 and has often been copied since then.
