Max Schmidt (politician, 1895)

Max Schmidt (born November 5, 1895 in Kiel ; † March 23, 1955 there ) was a German local politician ( SPD ). From 1951 to 1955 he was mayor of Kiel.

Life

In 1919 Schmidt joined the SPD, to which he belonged until the end of his life. Until 1926 he worked as an employee in a shipyard. From 1924 he was involved in the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold , of which he was secretary from 1926 to 1930. He then held the position of party secretary of the SPD in Wandsbek until the party was banned by the Nazis. In 1933 he was arrested by the Gestapo and then harassed. During the war he worked as an employee at the Germania shipyard.

Local politics

In 1920 Schmidt was elected to the community council of the then still independent community of Elmschenhagen . From 1945 until his death he was a member of the SPD parliamentary group in the Kiel council. In the first few years it was his main concern to organize the reconstruction of the city that had been destroyed in the war. On May 24, 1951, he was elected mayor and held this office until his death after a serious illness.
