Max Stury ( September 23, 1869 in Munich - 1946 ) was a German painter and opera singer ( bass baritone ).

Life

Stury, the son of a senior postal conductor, wanted to turn to painting first and for this purpose he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in April 1885 . His beautiful voice was noticed, however, and so he decided, encouraged by Vogel and August Kindermann, to pursue the career of a stage singer.

He studied for three years at the Academy of Music and then with the Italian singing master Cesare Galliera , until he, declared mature, took up his first engagement at the Hofbühne in Darmstadt on September 1, 1802.

There his roles such as "Jäger", "Eremit", "Alfio", "Silvio", "Masetto", "Duke Longueville" ( La Basoch by André Messager ), "Escamillo", but also "Wotan" and "Wanderer" were found always encouraging applause.

The artist worked at the grand ducal court theater for a full seven years, and during this long time both audiences and critics unanimously praised "the blooming beauty, the lush, well-flowing melodious sound of his wonderful baritone voice, which, despite the greatest effort, shines in unadulterated splendor at the end of the role".

His audience, whose recognition he quickly gained, sincerely regretted his departure when he took up engagement at the court theater in Altenburg in 1899. In 1900 the artist was hired for Bremen.

From 1912 to 1936 he worked in Coburg. He died in 1946.

His brothers Franz Xaver Stury and Richard Stury were theater actors.
